The Aquathlon's have kicked off and the USA National Open Water Swimming Championships are taking place the weekend of June 5TH in Long Beach, CA. TCSD is super excited to bring you one of the world's top open water swimming champions, Penny Dean!
Her name may not be well recognized, but her accomplishments are legendary. In 1978, after recently graduating from college, she set her sights on swimming the English Channel. The crossing record at that point, for men and women, was 8 hours and 45 minutes. Her swim obliterated the record by over an hour setting a new mark of 7 hours and 40 minutes. No man or woman came close to that record until Chad Hundeby reset the mark in 1994 at 7 hours and 17 minutes; he was coached by Penny as he broke her record. According to the Channel Swimming Association, and their rules, her mark is still the 4th fastest of all time and the fastest women's crossing.
Closer to home, she is the current record holder for the Catalina channel crossing (one way and both directions). She held 12 world records, was the 1979 Women's Professional Marathon Swimming world champion, was the head coach of the U.S. Long Distance team, and president of the College Swim Coaches Association. After retiring from the sport for medical reasons she went back to her alma mater and build the small division III swim team at Pomona College into a nationally recognized program. In addition to coaching many triathletes, Penny helps coach a local triathlon club 2 days a week in upstate New York.
This should seriously motivate you to come join us for a summer of Open Water swim racing right here in San Diego. Pier to Cove, Coronado Rough Water, Surf Monkey, Tour De Buoys, La Jolla Rough Water & Gatorman Championships and the La Jolla Cove 10 Mile Solo/Relays swims.
